Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage reintroduces biome variety compared to the Captain Scarlett DLC, as you play in a combat Arena, rural segments, the streets of a ruined city and the volcanic Forge, it focuses more on human combat as you fight biker gangs, soldiers and rival competitors, but still has some hostile wildlife here and there. The story also works well since it features Borderlands 2’s usually crazed up to 11 vibe but doesn’t then awkwardly try to get dramatic, it’s main characters, Torgue himself, Tiny Tina and Moxxi are all likeable, although the villains aren’t the most memorable they still work well enough. The DLC also helps cover the poor drop rate of Legendaries with Torgue vending machines that always offer a Legendary as their limited time item, they have their own Torgue currency unique to the DLC and the Legendaries are incredibly costly, but it gives you a path to some highly buffed gear. Once again the mechanics of its bonus boss, Pete the Invincible, are hard to grasp at first, which can take the fight from a moderate challenge to incredibly balltwisting, but not as bad as Master Gee from Scarlett's DLC.

I gave this DLC a thumbs down, but I did so reluctantly. Borderlands 2 is one of my all-time favorite games, and I really wanted to like this DLC. But I have to call it like I see it. It should be noted that I played this DLC in co-op mode with one other player, and I know from experience that some content feels very different in single-player mode, so my experiences may be different from those of a solo player. The storyline is good, and the dialog and voice acting for Mr. Torque, Tiny Tina, and others is all up to the usual high standards of the Borderlands 2 collection. The maps are also good, and offer a wide variety of combat encounters, ranging from car battles to arena fights to standard bandit and robot battles. Those are the aspects of this DLC that I give high marks. The problems I have with this DLC are the wildly inconsistent difficulty level and the crappy loot. Most fights were well balanced, but a few were just obvious overmatches that were winnable only because our characters came back to life over and over and our opponents didn’t. The Forge, especially, seemed to be engineered simply to kill player characters. The fights weren’t difficult because they were cleverly designed. They were difficult because they used spawning gimmicks to instantly surround and overwhelm the player characters. Baddies just magically appear behind you, or right next to you, or rain down on you from above. Those fights were incredibly frustrating, and I know that the friend I was playing with was just as mad as I was about the pointless deaths we suffered, and the corresponding drain on our money. Speaking of money, that brings me to the loot. Typically, Borderlands 2 offers good loot, and if you die a few times getting through some map area and quest line, you can’t feel too bad about it because you still end up being ahead on cash after you sell off your overstuffed inventory full of loot. Not so with this DLC. The loot is awful. I doubt I ever had more than five or six sellable loot items in my inventory at any one time, and they were almost always white-quality garbage items. The bad guys seldom dropped any loot. The equipment chests were almost nonexistent. To add insult to injury, the vending machines did not rescale, and most of them stayed at level 26 or 27 the whole time we were in the DLC, even though the quests and the bad guys did rescale up to level 30. We both finished at level 32, having started at level 27 and gained five levels doing the DLC, but almost all of our weapons and modules were the same level 21 to 26 items we had started with. I felt like I had wasted five levels’ worth of opportunity for equipment upgrades. Because of the lack of sellable loot and the many deaths we suffered, we both ended this DLC with about twenty-five or thirty thousand dollars less than when we started. In this DLC, though, you also earn Torque Tokens that can be used to buy guns from special Torque vending machines. Some of the guns in those machines are very nice, and I suppose the idea was that the Torque Tokens would make up for the lack of other loot. However, the Torque Token rewards were fairly meager, compared to the prices of the guns in the vending machines. By the time we had completed the DLC we had each accumulated only enough tokens to buy one or two blue-quality guns. We were both level 32 but could only find one machine that sold items as high as level 30. My friend bought the one weapon in the machine that was any good, and I didn’t buy anything. That really spoils the moment when you finally finish this grind and have less than nothing to show for it. It was a pitifully inadequate reward for the time and effort we put into this DLC, and it did not come close to balancing out the dollars and the upgrade opportunities we had lost by playing through the DLC instead of just continuing with the main storyline. My final verdict is that this DLC had great potential, given the interesting and amusing storyline and good maps, but the inconsistent and sometimes inappropriate difficulty, along with the dismal loot, made the DLC more frustrating than it was entertaining. By the time my friend and I got to the last fight, I just wanted it to be over, and I was mad at whoever had designed the DLC to be nothing but a money pit. That is not how you should feel playing a DLC, and that is why I do not recommend this one. IMHO, this DLC should have been targeted at player characters who have already completed the main storyline, maybe starting at a minimum level of 30, instead of starting at level 15 and ending at 30 (for the first play-through). It should also have been more consistent in its difficulty and more rewarding in loot and opportunities for equipment upgrades. As such, it would have provided a great interlude before starting a second storyline play-through in Vault Hunter Mode. I would give it maybe a 5 on a 10-point scale, which is a shame, as without the issues I noted, it would have deserved an 8 out of 10. On the chance that the developers read this review in search of some usable feedback (for Borderlands 3, hopefully!), I would offer this one observation. When a fight is winnable only because the player characters can endlessly respawn, and you have designed it in such a way as to eliminate the benefits of skilled game play or, in a co-op situation, mutual support and group tactics, then you have taken the players out of the game. Nothing they do, either right or wrong, affects the outcome. The outcome is achieved only because it is inevitable, assuming the players have enough patience to persevere until the end. That is not good game design, because, in taking the player out of the equation, you have taken from them the chance for a genuine victory, a feel-good moment, a sense of accomplishment in the outcome. That is when players feel they have been cheated rather than challenged, and no reward, however large, can undo that feeling. If you want to know what that looks like, look at the boss fights in this DLC.

The buggiest DLC out of the bunch, impossible to easily kill stuff in the forge because all the railings are bulletproof, theres a severe lack of spawn points throughout the entire DLC, you cant even do the Death race side quest without hitting multiple invisible walls and end up turned completely around. The worst thing about this entire game in general is its invisible walls.

This DLC is absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and was rushed out the door to meet the Season Pass requirement. The only positive things about it is a) the Torgue vending machines (which only matter if you never use Gibbed), b) the Kitten assault rifle and Slow Hand shotgun, c) the ONE raid boss being a massive pushover who makes it easy to farm crystals. Everything else about it is complete trash. The story can't even scrape by on being at least "functional". Moxxi will ask you to meet her at a location just to tell you to go somewhere else so Tina can tell you to go somewhere else. There is no reason for this runaround other than stretching out the playtime. If you want an idea of how terrible the story is, you're expected to run through the same level twice. No, this isn't a side mission where it would be acceptable. This is purely the main story. They were so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lazy that they expect you to run through a level twice. Thankfully, the second go around, you can just grenade jump to skip 99% of it because the people who made this suck at their job. How about the combat? Well, half the enemies are running elemental weapons and the other half seem to be running sniper rifles. This makes for a pretty awful mobbing experience all around for what little mobbing exists. Outside of the mission required arena fight, there were like 6 mobbing encounters and half of them were in the Flyboy level. The bosses are also completely atrocious. Pyro Pete (and even his DLC, to a lesser degree) is a glorified DPS dummy a la Marcus' shooting range. Motor Mama was clearly made to be a second raid boss that likely got scrapped given the layout of the area, likely because making a vehicle-cringed raid boss sounds like the worst ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idea I've ever heard. Flyboy gets replaced with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blimp that is super easy to cheese while still being annoying to fight. Then you have Badassasaurus. This boss makes my blood ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boil. It's not the massive amounts of homing AoEs that will instantly health gate you. It's not the critical hit spots that don't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ scale properly and disappear after taking enough damage. It's not the fact that you can get instakilled if he somehow runs you over, even when in FFYL. It's not the bullet reflection that will send your shots back at you. What makes this boss the worst thing Gearbox ever created is that they let you literally shoot it from outside of the arena while you hide behind the gate. Even they know this boss is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful to fight and allow you to basically cheat. This DLC is terrible. Gearbox knows it's terrible. If you care about the Slow Hand or the Kitten, just Gibbed them into your inventory.
