Dead Money is understandably polarizing for many reasons, primarily that it's very different from the rest of the game, focusing more on survival horror aspects than the shooter RPG elements of base game. Going from effortlessly killing everything and having a lot of stuff at your disposal to having to scrounge for supplies is a shock to the system that a lot won't appreciate. It is a beginners trap. But if you can meet the Sierra Madre on its terms and do some prep work, Dead Money is a thrilling and unique experience that no other part of the game can truly offer. The characters are VERY well written (in a game where a lot of characters have incredible dialogue), and the lore of the Sierra Madre is interesting. Overall, it's not for everyone, but I think you should at least try it. You might just be surprised at how the shift in gameplay may make things just as enjoyable!

👍 Good
Best dlc in my opinion, even though it turned me paranoid towards radios and traps x) Also the only dlc where your companions have a big part in the story and gameplay (Dog will clear path from enemies, Christine will give you extra time against radios and Dean extra time against poisonous clouds). The way you behave towards your allies will change their outcome at the end. I admit I saved a lot because you're very likely to fall in traps, but I liked this atmosphere. Also, the holoriffle you earn at beginning, I never used any other weapon after the dlc x) You finally confront Elijah, a subversive character that you have heard from Helios One and the Big MT. The mixed reviews may be because of the lack of safe places, at the opposite of other dlcs, you won't feel safe anywhere and there's no way to travel back before the story ends. It's difficult and horrifying, but it's worth it.
I was actually laughing reading the negative reviews about this DLC. It seems like you either love or hate it. I enjoyed it for its nostalgia but I definitely didn't enjoy it as much the first time I played through it. Can't say I hated it enough to give it a bad review but there was definitely some frustration. Not knowing the story the Villa portion can drag on a bit but other than that love it.
👎 Bad
Horrible. I've never gotten so angry from any video game ever. Never been more frustrated in all my life. Its so bad that it makes me like all of New Vegas a little bit less after playing it.
This DLC is absolutely terrible. So much convoluted nonsense in every possible way you can imagine. It took me 15 minutes to figure out how to get the mutant to stay and operate the switches. Blood boiling crap that has no place in video games. I'm not sure how such a pile of crap ended up in such a legendary game. It's not the million traps and gimmicky nonsense that forces you to quick save and remember whats coming ahead that makes the DLC so bad, oh no,. It's all of the little things this DLC does so badly. I didnt even know game design could get this bad in a professional studio that makes a legendary game beforehand. Oh, and if you play unarmed and are trying to do a complete run without using other weapons, NOPE. Screw you and your playstyle says this DLC. Just get it on sale for the level cap increase but seriously there is no reason to play this absolute pile of dog crap. Holy god this DLC sucks so bad. Who asked for this?
Worst DLC. It has some good characters, an interesting story and a cool setting in the Sierra Madre (although it feels VERY empty outside of the casino) but that is everything it has going for it. It punishes the player for exploration through poison clouds, traps and emitters that blow off your head, you fight the same mobs over and over again and it wants you to get nothing out of it because that's the theme. It is painful and frustrating BY DESIGN, it wants you to hate this place and that's just not what a game should be for me. If you think story is more important than anything, more important than fun, more important than gameplay and you're a lil bit of a masochist, go for it. I'd rather watch a horror movie where at least I'm not the one being tortured for the narrative.
