Short Review Tabletop Simulator is less a game and more a board game engine, and that distinction matters a lot for whether you'll get anything out of it. On its own, without the Steam Workshop, it's pretty bare bones. With the Workshop, it's one of the best things on Steam for board game fans, with thousands of community-made games covering pretty much anything you'd want to play. If you enjoy board games and have people to play with, this is a no-brainer. If you're mainly a solo player, then there isn't much here for you. Highly recommended for folks who have friends and like tabletop gaming. Full Review Tabletop Simulator is one of the harder games to review because calling it a "game" is a bit of a stretch. It's really a physics sandbox and mod platform built around the concept of playing tabletop games online. The base package includes around 15 classics like Chess, Poker, Dominoes, and Mahjong, which are fine but will get boring fast if that's all you're working with. The real value is entirely dependent on the Steam Workshop, and once you factor that in, the whole thing opens up considerably. The Steam Workshop. This is where Tabletop Simulator actually earns its price tag. There are thousands of community-created games on the Workshop, and if a board game has been out for a year or two, there's a good chance it already has at least one Workshop version, sometimes multiple. Quality varies, obviously, but the sheer volume means there's almost always something worth playing. My friends and I have been able to try out a ton of games we otherwise wouldn't have, either because the physical version was too expensive to gamble on or we just weren't interested enough to commit to a purchase. It's a fantastic way to try before you buy, and some board game designers have even posted official versions of their games on the Workshop themselves to get people playing. That's a pretty good sign that the platform has real legitimacy in the tabletop space. The tools and controls. If you want to create your own games, the tools are there. You can import custom assets, build boards, set up scripting with Lua, import 3D models, and upload everything to the Workshop or share it privately. It's more involved than just loading up an existing mod, but the option being there at all adds a lot to what the platform can be. The controls do take some getting used to at first, but once they click, they're fine. I tried making something myself but decided it wasn't worth the time investment, lol. Maybe one of y'all can do it. The... predicament. This is fundamentally a multiplayer experience, and if you don't have people to play with, there's not much here for you. Setting up certain games can also be a bit of a process, and keeping track of everything mid-game relies mostly on you and your group staying organized, since automation varies a lot between mods. Also worth acknowledging: playing free Workshop versions of games does mean the original developers aren't seeing any money from those sessions. It's not something that ruins the experience, but it's worth being aware of if that kind of thing matters to you. Overall. Tabletop Simulator is one of my favorite things on Steam, and I say that as someone who has gotten way more use out of it than I probably expected to when I first picked it up. It has nearly endless replay value as long as you have a group to play with, and the Workshop community keeps it growing. If you like board games and have friends to drag into a voice chat, this is worth every penny, ideally on sale. If you're a solo player or don't have a group lined up, it's probably not for you, but there are plenty of folks out there who are willing to play.
