Another inventive and unique japanese indie game published by Waku Waku, Drunken Rogue is a master of it's own vibe and a drunken blast to play that takes it's own gimmick and makes something special out of it! Now, at the time of review I haven't played much of the official release (mostly played the demo), but I want to get the ball rolling on an early review because I don't think it's super clear what kind of game Drunken Rogue is. Despite being listed as a roguelike deckbuilder, this game feels more like roguelike character building game based all around DnD checks. Basically, you have 6 stats and 2 playable characters who raise them in slightly different ways. You can get gear and items to improve the stats or help you 'cheat' on checks, and the whole game is a series of checks against the stats; Unlock for opening chests, Perception for traps, you get the gist. So, in that environment, the game seems almost sterile...what makes it so unique? Well, there are two main gimmicks, and for comedic effect, i'll leave the drunken elephant unaddressed for now. The game has the ability to postpone checks, delaying the check and making the rewards much greater, but the check itself much higher too. While it can be reasonably assumed that you'll be more powerful in the future, you're flying closer and closer to the sun each time you do so, and if you're postponing a challenge you can't meet, you're living on borrowed time. It adds a fun risk/reward dynamic that makes winning runs feel so much better. But even with that, there's something missing, some X-factor that really makes the game replayable right? Well, let's just say such a thing exists, and it involves booze...lots, and lots of booze. There is another stat called Tipsiness, and at 0, your checks are totally static, meaning you need 8 Unlock to beat an 8 Unlock check. But down a bottle or two and all of a sudden your checks balloon in size, and inconsistency; they become WAY more random but on average MUCH higher, and combined with the music switching to jazzy and upbeat at high Tipsiness, and all of a sudden the game becomes a trip of manic laughter as you slaughter checks left and right and demolish anything that dare gets in your way, at least until you get a bit overeager, realise that 80% success rate is not in fact 100%, and enter the 'finding out' phase as your Tipsiness drops, the music calms down, and your character's frenetic exclamation marks!... get replaced with 3 dots as they too start coming down from the high... And even if you don't want to play recklessly while drunk, you don't really have a choice, because there's a real nasty side effect you'll grapple with even IF you manage to fuel your healthy coping mechanism; Hallucinations. That's right, getting too drunk outright obfuscates the checks themselves, meaning you can charge forward with reckless abandon if you truly feel you can do no wrong, or use your very limited but invaluable herbs to clear up said hallucinations, at the cost of killing your buzz. It is SUCH a fun gameplay loop that really does capture the essence of drunken confidence and the ecstasy that comes with it, and this is the x-factor that really makes the game stand out and shine in my opinion. Not to mention how there are two different characters with different playstyles that both play with this gimmick! Now, as said prior this is an early review, so it's hard to gauge how long or difficult the game will be in its later stages (I'd like to update this when I get there), but for the earlier runs I have done, the game is accessible yet super addictive, the plot is fun and the character's are very silly, it's just a very authentic game that realises it's gimmick solidly; The drunken aspect isn't just slapped in as a joke, it's a crucial part of the gameplay too, and it makes this a truly unique and fun experience! Definitely recommend!

In this game, you can get wasted before you can in GTA6. Except here, gettin' wasted is the goal! ...this is one of those games that knows it's silly and stupid as hell and runs with it, yet beyond its knowingly silly premise and refusal to take itself seriously, here you've got a surprisingly tense and challenging experience where you can manipulate, delay, and even bypass its various RNG checks through a combination of level-ups, item drops, skills, and probably other things I've yet to see. But the main deal here? Your heroines go into each stage blind stinkin' drunk, and making sure you keep as little blood as possible running through their alcohol streams allows you to roll dice to add to your stats, potentially giving you the edge you need to get through the game's many obstacles when your base stats aren't going to do the job on their own - the more drunk off your ass you are, the higher the potential bonus. But booze doesn't necessarily come easy in the middle of a run, and if you can't find any, you may have to sacrifice other rewards - particularly a choice between a full heal or additional stat points (that you can distribute freely, by the way) - for one of the few guaranteed ways to top off. And even if you CAN make sure you're staggering around in a drunken rampage as much as possible, you may just be opening yourself up to hallucinations that completely hide either your reward, the exact nature of the check you're about to go up against, or both (though occasionally you can find items that help with this, they tend to be finite), and if the game's already shown me once that it can directly use your Tipsiness level against you, it's more than likely going to do it again, so be careful if you think your plan to uncap your maximum Tipsiness and crank your drunkenness about three times past the initial cap is going to be an automatic win for the rest of the stage. But it's never completely unfair! While a few things are deliberately meant to blindside you (hint: invest a bit in Perception to prevent as much of this as you can), I've yet to see a situation where it's ever completely a mystery what you need to do in order to succeed in your current challenges (barring the hallucinations where that's the point of the penalty), and a combination of forward planning, not being too quick to distribute stats, and knowing when postponing challenges won't bite you in the ass - it'll take you far. And don't be afraid to dawdle while making decisions. Your two player characters may be surprisingly coherent drunks, but they've usually got something silly to say about their situations. Play the demo! I think you might be inspired to drop a few bucks afterward. (...I'm not sure if I'm sorry or not for that opener. Also this game doesn't seem to install on the Steam Deck yet for reasons I've yet to figure out, so mind that.)
The game is actually quite fun and addictive once you understand the core mechanics, but the UX does not help with this at all. This is a pretty common problem with Japanese indie titles but once you get past its initial bombardment of text and information, the actual game is quite straight forward. At its core it's a game about resource management. You're constantly doing the mental calculations of whether to use an item on this encounter or just spend the skill points. You can also delay an encounter (called Dangers in this game), by sending it to the next level, albeit it at an increased difficulty as well as better rewards. The tipsy number also adds an rng aspect to the fights, allowing you to potentially high roll through encounters without spending any resources. It can function as a way for you to bounce back from a bad run. For people who are new, Lita is definitely the better character to go through the game, though Endo I believe is overall the stronger character. It's cheap so if you're a fan of rogue-likes and is a fan of having the risk reward hijack your brain, give it a shot. The game screen might appear intimidating at first but after a couple of runs, it's really quite easy to get the hang of. The art is also quite expressive and cute, complementing the wacky characters. I do wish that some of the dialogue isn't done while I'm dungeon crawling, as I find it very hard to read and digest both the conversation and all the information on screen.
